Fifty, Nifty

Now, I may have blogged about this last summer, but as I travel more extensively (thanks, Harvard!), I’m beginning to notice a trend: as soon as we (Americans) leave the country, we begin referring to it as “The States.” Now, I don’t know why or how, but it seems to work on an on-off switch that is flicked almost as soon as we embark upon foreign soils. We say it when speaking to other temporary expats, as well as to the natives. Every time it slips off my tongue, I make a semi-conscious mental note of how weird it is, knowing full well that I will say it again the next time.

Hmm…
